Allergy to plaquenil after being on it for years

I have been getting these horrible rashes and they are not related to sun exposure. I am starting to wonder if they are related to Plaquenil.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. I am interested to see if anyone here has gotten a rash from Plaquenil after being on it for several months. I have been getting these horrible rashes and they are not related to sun exposure. I am starting to wonder if they are related to Plaquenil. My doctor now wants me to start on Chloroquine instead of plaquenil. Plaquenil, widely used to treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory and dermatologic conditions, is very effective, and “the risk of toxicity in the first five years for someone without special risk factors is very low,” Dr. Marmor said. However, risk increases with duration of use.

I've always been one to go for the natural route and am starting to feel like I should just stop taking everything and see what happens - so frustrating. My doctor now wants me to start on Chloroquine instead of plaquenil.

  6. Oct 17, 2005 Just wondering if anyone has experienced an allergic reaction to CellCept. I started on the drug about two months ago after being taken off of Plaquenil because of an allergic reaction it made me itchy. Just this past week, I've noticed bumps on my neck and face mostly forehead.

Submitted 2 years ago * by vadegarys. So after three weeks of taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine I developed a rash and had to stop. Now I'm really worried since Plaquenil is supposed to be the 'life insurance' drug of lupus, people have less flares on it, live longer, etc. Been on Plaquenil for 30 years for rheumatoid arthritis. I don’t know if I have side effect from this drug as they are intermittent. Itching - weird times not consistent Eye watering - constant Headaches - hormonal, RA related Always had thin hair - never fell out No stomach issues ever Get eyes checked 1x a year. Overall Plaquenil did take away the muscle and joint pain. It worked wonders for that. For that reason I am satisfied with plaquenil for what I took it for. Took about 5-6 months to see full effect. Since reducing the dose from 400mg to 200mg 4 months ago I do feel some of this pain returning You win some, you lose some! M 49 1 years 400mg day

I was in remission soI stopped but Dr upset as he said it was important to keep damage to joints down. Anyway the RA flared and I'm back taking one a day. Hoping to feel better again but seems slow.
