Email us anytime at [email protected] I was dx in August with Lupus and my Rheumy said she was afraid to start me on Plaquenil since I had a bad reaction to a Sulfa antibiotic I took and the same reaction when a Dr gave me Lasix. I think I'm going to tell my Rheumy that I at least want to try Plaquenil and take the risk (I only got a really red rash that looked like measles when I had the reaction).thanks, Robin I have a sulfa allergy, and have taken Plaquenil for 4 years without any adverse effects. I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil without any problems. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies.

I just wanted to let you know that I am highly allergic to sulfa drugs and have been on plaquenil for almost 8 years with no problems at all. I did accidentally take a sulfa drug about 5 years ago and still had the horrible reaction so know I'm still allergic even while being on plaquenil. While the names sulfa, sulfite, and sulfate sounds similar, they are distinctly different compounds. While each can cause an allergic reaction on its own, there is no direct relationship between them, so you do not need to avoid sulfites or sulfates just because of your sulfa allergy diagnosis and vice versa. They are grouped as “sulfa” antibiotics because they contain a substance called sulfonamide. Bactrim and Septra are often prescribed for bacterial infections, especially urinary tract infections. They are also sometimes given prophylactically i.e. to prevent infection, especially in people taking immunosuppressive medications.

Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had.

Often people are allergic to sulfa drugs and sulfites. Therefore may think that it is necessary for them to avoid sulfates and sulfur, as well. In this article I will explain to you the differences between these four substances and the allergic reactions to be aware of. Sulfa Drugs Sulfonamides I took it when first diagnosed and turned out to have a terrible allergy-not to the sulfa, but to the quinine in the drug. The itching was unreal and took 3 weeks to get our of my system. I do take sulfasalazine-another sulfa drug that doesn't act like one. My rhuemy told me not to take any others because some regular slafa drugs can cause flares. Dec 22, 2017 Sulfa allergy can result in serious complications, including anaphylaxis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Anaphylaxis.
