Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Jan 25, 2012 Regular plaquenil eye exams should quell concerns about eye complications, which are very rare. I was advised to take it at bed time, so I would sleep through any other side effects it might cause me, but I never noticed any side effects at all -- except feeling a lot better, less fatigue, less joint pain, and fewer issues overall. Rather than put you on Cellcept, it makes far more sense to up your steroids 5 mg. And if Plaquenil isn't working, most docs STOP IT. It doesn't work for some patients. It didn't for me and I tried it 2X and 1X even Atabrine that turned me yellow. Cellcept is a BIG GUN drug, usually reserved for when patients fail on other stuff. Mycophenolate Mofetil CellCept and Mycophenolate Sodium Myfortic are immunosuppressant drugs a class of drugs that reduce the strength of the body’s immune system used in the treatment of several autoimmune diseases. Plaquenil just takes a while to work and it’s effects don’t come overnight. It takes a good couple of months and you really don’t notice how well it works until you miss a dose. Mycophenolate works better for those with kidney involvement but there are other options outside of this that are still used for lupus nephritis if this is what you have.
