Can you take plaquenil if you are allergic to sulfa

But if you get a rash or more serious reaction when you take one of these drugs, you may have a sulfa allergy. Sulfa drugs, also called sulfonamides, include antibiotics and other types of drugs. Around 3% of people have some type of reaction to them.

Oct 21, 2015 These are not sulfates. Sulfate used after a drug name is just the last name of the chemical, its the sulfate salt. It has nothing to do with sulfonamides. Allergy to sulfonamide antibiotics has no relationship to allergies to hydroxychloroquine. I think this is a really strong drug for her to take, especially if she is not fighting infections on just the steroids. But the doc said that they cannot give her plaquenil because she is allergic to sulfa drugs. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions.

She’ll decide whether to take you off the drug and how to treat your symptoms. Tell your doctor right away if you think you’re having a reaction to a sulfa drug.

Feb 17, 2009 Plaquenil isn't a 'sulfa' drug which means a certain sort of antibiotic, the sulfonamides. Plenty of people who are allergic to those sulfa drugs take Plaquenil without any problem. This sounds all very odd to me! Even if you’re allergic to antibiotics that have sulfa, you might be able to take some other types of sulfa drugs without a reaction. Ones that may be safe to take include Glyburide Glynase. If you're taking Plaquenil for an autoimmune condition, your symptoms should begin to improve after a few months, but it can take up to six months for full effects.
