When to stop hydroxychloroquine in sle

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

INTRODUCTION Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is an alkalinizing lysosomatropic drug that accumulates in lysosomes where it inhibits some important functions by increasing the pH. HCQ has proved to be effective in a number of autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus SLE. In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, hydroxychloroquine prevents disease flares and damage accrual and facilitates the response to mycophenolate mofetil in those with renal involvement. A study was undertaken to determine whether hydroxychloroquine also exerts a protective effect on survival. Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest. I am on plaquenil but also experience some of the same things you do. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion. or maybe another.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

  4. Three anti-malarial drugs are prescribed for lupus symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the most commonly prescribed because it is generally believed to cause fewer side effects; chloroquine Aralen has a reputation for more serious side effects, but it may be prescribed in situations where hydroxychloroquine cannot be used.

Importance Hydroxychloroquine-induced pigmentation is not a rare adverse effect. Our data support the hypothesis that hydroxychloroquine-induced pigmentation is secondary to ecchymosis or bruising. Objective To describe the clinical features and outcome of hydroxychloroquine HCQ-induced pigmentation in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE. Chloroquine CQ is used to prevent and treat malaria and amebiasis, while hydroxychloroquine HCQ, a less toxic metabolite of chloroquine, is used to treat rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, rheumatoid arthritis RA, juvenile idiopathic arthritis JIA and Sjogren's syndrome.

The Risk of Retinal Toxicity with Plaquenil One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits. As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur.
